Egg rolls are delicious!
I have yet to eat one I don’t like.
But….clean eating and egg roll don’t really fit, do they?
I am happy to announce that all changes TODAY. We can now enjoy the deliciousness of egg rolls without the deep fried guilt with this 7 Ingredient Skinny Egg Roll in a Bowl.
The 7 whole food ingredients in this clean egg roll in a bowl will fill you up and satisfy even the most intense Chinese food cravings.
Trust me, you won’t even miss the crispy outer-shell.
This recipe was inspired by a similar one I made and posted on Instagram last year. I did not expect so many of you to be interested in it. So obviously, I had to perfect the recipe and share it with all of you.
The simplicity of this dairy free recipe alone is worth it’s weight in gold! All you have to do is:
Brown the sausage, add a bag of prepared coleslaw mix, red pepper and green onion slices, and the 3 seasoning ingredients.
The whole gluten free meal takes less than 30 minutes to prepare. That’s my kind of dinner recipe!
7-Ingredient Skinny Egg Roll Bowl #cleaneating #healthy #dinner #sammisrecipes Click To Tweet
I will admit if I have it on hand, I sometimes drizzle a little Hot SweetChili Sauce on top of my Skinny Egg Roll in a Bowl because I still want a little sweet with my salty flavors.
And in my humble opinion, a teaspoon or two of that sauce doesn’t disqualify this clean egg roll in a bowl from being healthy.
However, the love of my life, the pumpkin to my latte, and the truesophisticated palate of this marriage thought the recipe was perfect as is. I was a little worried he would miss the fried wrapper, but he didn’t.
Winning 😉
So the next time you are needing a quick dinner idea and a healthy alternative to Chinese takeout give this simple recipe a whirl!
Even kids will like this recipe. It’s a family favorite for good reason!
7 Ingredient Skinny Eggroll Bowl
Chinese food in a bowl is always a winner, but easy and healthy Chinese recipes are even better. Whether you are following Whole 30, low carb, Weight Watchers, 21 Day Fix, Paleo, or Thm (Trim Healthy Mama), you will love the newest gluten free recipe on the block!

This is similar to a recipe I created a while back. I didn’t set out to create a recipe but use leftovers. It was so good it ended up as a go to recipe. Since this is so close to mine I would like to add that the following can be safely added true sweet chili sauce, fish sauce[very very small amount].This also is quite usable with other meats including fish seafood chicken beef. If you decide to use pork make sure its either marinated or seasoned. It has a tendency to get lost in the dish otherwise.

Thanks for sharing! I tried it tonight and really enjoyed it! However, I found it to have a very salty taste. My guess is that it’s due to the soy sauce I used or I screwed something up when mixing everything. 🙂 Has anyone experienced this as well? Any ideas on how to counteract it?
Thanks!

Hi Kasee! Thanks for taking the time to leave your comment. 🙂 I am glad you enjoyed the recipe, although you found it to be too salty. My guess is maybe you added more than 1/4 cup soy sauce, used a little less veggies than I did, or your meat was already pretty salty. Maybe the saltiness was due to one of those 3 things or I do think different soy sauces can taste “saltier” than others, or maybe that is just me. Ha! Perhaps if you make it again, you can use less soy sauce and add more if needed. Happy cooking and thanks again for stopping by! 🙂

YOU CAN USE A LITE OR LOW SODIUM SOY SAUCE

Absolutely! Thanks for the suggestion, Lori. I love coconut aminos for just that reason. SO much less sodium. 🙂

Made this tonight and it was delicious!!! I eat everything, but even my husband and two year old even ate until they were full. My daughter even said “good meat!” and she is a strict veggie/ fruit fan. I had regular ginger and garlic powder which i used instead of what the recipe called for, and i added lo mein noodles to make it more “mealy”. Will definitely make this again for its ease and flavor.

That’s a great idea to add lo mein noodles. Thanks for the suggestion, Laura. So happy to hear of your positive recipe experiences with even a veggie/fruit fan. 😉 Blessings to you and your family!

I totally made this and totally didn’t at the same time. I didn’t have turkey sausage but I had regular ground turkey. It was amazing. I added some extra garlic and sage and it was hit! My boys (husband and son) don’t like egg rolls but ate the heck out of this! I’ll make it again with sausage.
And you’re just cute as a button!!
Thanks for sharing with us!!

Quick question about the garlic. Seems like a lot. Will it taste like a garlic dish or does the flavor blend in. I am looking forward to making this… thanks for sharing.

Hi Julie,
Thanks for your question. 5 cloves of garlic is what the recipe calls for, but you can always use less. 🙂 The recipe makes quite a bit and I don’t think the garlic is overpowering. However, I am sure my garlic cloves are on the smaller side, rather than 5 huge cloves. Use your best judgement regarding your affection for garlic. 😉 I hope you enjoy this yummy recipe!

What could I substitute to make this vegan? I have a friend that was put on a vegan diet and I was thinking of making this. Do you think that tofu could be used instead of the meat?
-
Sammi Ricke
Hi Nina,
I have not worked with tofu before, but that would be my first guess. I know it takes on whatever flavors are in that particular dish. Good luck!
Perhaps she would like these two dishes:

I used Yves veggie cuisine spicy Italian sausage. You don’t have to use all 4 sausages it will give it flavour and I switched up the hot sauce for a drizzle of seame oil ????

I used Jennie O turkey sausage, which is 2 points for 2 ozs. All other ingredients are 0 points. So it depends on many servings you make it into. If you make it 4 servings, then it would 4 points per serving.

I made this and I loved it! However that could be because I used spicy ground pork, which is probably not very healthy (there was a lot of grease). I can’t seem to find “spicy ground turkey sausage” in any grocery store. Would I be able to make my own? I can find plain ground turkey. What kind of spices are we talking about?

Hi Laura! I am so glad you loved this dish 🙂 If you can find plain ground turkey sausage add crushed red pepper flakes, onion & garlic powder, paprika, salt and pepper, and maybe a little cayenne pepper powder for a little more heat. I have used the plain variety and added these spices and the recipe turned out just as delicious 🙂 I am just all about the easiest and healthiest route so I try to buy the “premade” spicy kind! 😉 Blessings to you! I hope this helps.

I am always looking for quick recipes and this one looks awesome but i only have ground beef on hand, do you think that will change the flavor profile too much?
-

May 30, 2017 at 3:21 PM ·Reply
Hi Janette! Ground beef will be just fine. I would add some dried red pepper flakes/cayenne pepper/chili pepper to your beef as it browns to give it a little more flavor. If your egg roll bowl is a lacking in flavor, add in a little more garlic and onion at the end! I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do!
